Message from the Head of the Department
It is with profound honour, deep humility, and an abiding sense of responsibility that I welcome you to the Department of Psychology, Sardar Patel University,, Vallabh Vidyanagar.
Since its inception in 1981, the Department has steadfastly upheld the ideals of academic excellence, scientific inquiry, ethical scholarship, and service to society. Established with the vision of promoting quality education in Psychology, the Department has grown considerably since its early years. From a modest beginning with a small cohort of students, it has evolved into one of Gujarat’s distinguished centres for higher education and research in Psychological Science. Over more than four decades, it has consistently nurtured generations of psychologists, educators, researchers, counsellors, academicians, and professionals who continue to make meaningful contributions across diverse sectors of society.
The remarkable journey of the Department has been shaped by the wisdom, dedication, and visionary leadership of an eminent succession of Heads who laid the foundations of its enduring academic culture. We proudly acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Prof. (Dr.) Pramod Kumar, the Founding Head of the Department, whose foresight established a strong academic framework that continues to guide us. His legacy was strengthened by the distinguished leadership of Dr. Sudhir Mukharji, Prof. (Dr.) L. R. Yagnik, Prof. (Dr.) Samir J. Patel, and Prof. (Dr.) Suresh M. Makvana, each of whom enriched the Department through academic innovation, research leadership, institutional development, and an unwavering commitment to student welfare. Their collective contributions have transformed the Department into a vibrant centre of learning and scholarship, inspiring future generations to pursue excellence with integrity and dedication.
Having taken charge as Professor and Head of the Department on 1 June 2026, I consider it a privilege to build upon this distinguished legacy while embracing the opportunities and challenges of contemporary higher education. My commitment is to further strengthen the Department through academic innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, research excellence, international engagement, and meaningful community service. While honouring our rich traditions, we shall continue to embrace progressive ideas, emerging technologies, and evidence-based practices that prepare our students to thrive in an increasingly dynamic and interconnected world.
Psychology today occupies a uniquely significant position among the sciences. It provides essential insights into human cognition, behaviour, emotion, resilience, learning, organisational functioning, leadership, mental health, and social well-being. As societies confront increasingly complex psychological, technological, educational, and organisational challenges, the discipline has become indispensable in shaping healthier individuals, stronger institutions, and more compassionate communities. Our Department therefore remains committed not merely to imparting knowledge but to cultivating reflective thinkers, ethical professionals, skilled researchers, and socially responsible citizens who apply psychological science for the betterment of humanity.
The Department has consistently expanded its academic horizons through the introduction of specialised postgraduate education in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and Clinical and Abnormal Psychology, thereby responding to emerging societal and professional needs. A significant milestone was achieved with the introduction of the M.Phil. Programme in Psychology in 1994, one of the pioneering programmes in Gujarat, which substantially strengthened advanced research and professional training. The Department continues to facilitate high-quality doctoral research across diverse domains including mental health, organisational behaviour, counselling, educational psychology, stress management, positive psychology, ageing, child development, meditation, tribal development, health psychology, community psychology, behavioural sciences, and human resource development.
Our Department has earned recognition through the successful organisation of numerous National and International Conferences, Research Methodology Courses, Faculty Development Programmes, Workshops, Seminars, Expert Lectures, Capacity Building Programmes, Psychological Assessment and Counselling Initiatives, and Mental Health Awareness Campaigns. The successful conduct of the ICSSR-sponsored Research Methodology Course, participation in the Indian Science Congress Association, and continuous engagement with educational institutions, healthcare organisations, industries, and community agencies exemplify our commitment to academic excellence and societal relevance. These initiatives provide valuable opportunities for intellectual exchange, professional networking, innovation, and collaborative research while nurturing a vibrant academic culture.
The true strength of any academic institution resides in its people. I am privileged to work alongside a dedicated and accomplished team of faculty members whose commitment to teaching, research, and student development enriches every dimension of our Department. Prof. Sangita Pathak continues to make distinguished contributions through her scholarship and mentorship, while Dr. Vikas Rohit, Dr. Mahendra Patel and Dr. Mahesh Bharvad serving as Ad-hoc Assistant Professors, contribute with remarkable enthusiasm to teaching, research, extension activities, and student engagement. Together, we remain committed to creating an inclusive, intellectually stimulating, and student-centred academic environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, critical inquiry, ethical responsibility, and lifelong learning.
Looking towards the future, our vision is both ambitious and purposeful. We aspire to establish the Department as a nationally and internationally recognised centre of excellence in Psychological Science through transformative teaching, pioneering research, technological integration, interdisciplinary partnerships, global collaborations, and impactful community engagement. We shall continue to strengthen our research ecosystem, encourage innovation, promote international academic exchange, and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of mental health, education, organisational development, and public policy.
To our prospective students, research scholars, alumni, academicians, professionals, collaborators, and visitors, I extend my warmest invitation to become part of our distinguished academic community. The Department of Psychology at Sardar Patel University is more than an academic institution; it is a community of scholars united by curiosity, integrity, compassion, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence. Together, let us continue to advance the frontiers of psychological knowledge while contributing meaningfully to the well-being of individuals, organisations, and society.
I convey my sincere best wishes to every member of our academic fraternity for continued success, meaningful scholarship, and lifelong learning. May our collective endeavours continue to illuminate minds, transform lives, and uphold the enduring ideals of Sardar Patel University.
