Department Profile
- Electronics today stands at the forefront of the rapidly expanding horizon of Science and Technology. Growth in the field of electronics has been so phenomenal in the recent years that it has entirely changed the life style of people.
- The ease, the precision, the sophistication and the flexibility provided by electronics in all walks of life and industrial systems has made it a very important subject of study. It is indeed considered as a catalyst of scientific and technological progress.
- Electronics has, therefore, become a core subject in the engineering curricula of all disciplines. However, it has been recognized that in order to keep pace with the rapid technological developments taking place all over the world, the engineering-oriented training alone is just not sufficient for our country.
- It is because, that a large component of electronics is actually a science based one and hence there is a strong need to lay emphasis on know -why in addition to know-how. To bridge this gap the University Grant Commission (UGC), New Delhi in collaboration with the Department of Electronics (DoE – presently known as DIT) Government of India, New Delhi, decided to launch a two year M.Sc. (Electronic Science) programme in 1984.
- Sardar Patel University, with a strong nucleus for initiating basic research and development and also where electronic industries and organizations exist around, quickly realized the need of such a programme. Sardar Patel University in 1988 has thus established the P.G.Department of Electronic Science with the support of local funding. The programme was duly recognized later by both the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Department of Electronics (DoE) New Delhi, in February 1990.
- The Department is presently offering a two-year (Four Semester) M. Sc. (Electronics) course and also a Ph.D. programme in Electronics under the Faculty of Science. Candidates with a B.Sc. (Electronics / Instrumentation), degree are normally eligible for admission, on merit basis, into the M.Sc. (Electronics) course.
- The manpower generated from these programs is finding excellent employment opportunities in Scientific Laboratories, Electronic Industries, Academic Institutions etc.. The generated manpower is also being found to possess a potential for self-employment as envisaged by both the UGC and DOE.
