The department was established in June ,1961 with commencement of M.Sc. program under the able stewardship of Prof. S.M.Shah , the first head of the department. After the department was made self sufficient for M.Sc. program, the research program that is Ph.D. program was started in 1968. Looking at the need of the time, M.Phil program was started in June,1984.

The department is housed on the first floor of the three storey building built through U.G.C.’s building rent. The floor is also shared by the department of Mathematics. It  is located to the south-east of University administrative block building and to the east of University central library – Bhaikaka library.
