Paper I (Advanced General Sociology)
This paper offers a foundation course to students. It is aimed at teaching them the
nature of sociology and perspectives of sociology Two books are prescribed for this paper
(1) Sociology : A systematic Introduction by Harry M. Johnson and (2) Sociology : Themes
and perspectives by Harlambos and Heald.
Paper II (Rural Social change in India)
This paper aims at exploring the composition of Indian rural sector and dynamics of
rural social change in India. It focuses on stratification and status and also on major
social Institutions of India. It covers government planning programmes and its impact on
rural population. IT includes panchayati raj institutions and social change.
Paper III (Social Research)
This paper focuses on scientific understanding and importance of social research to
students. It includes nature of scientific research, research design, methods, sampling
techniques, social measurement, tools for data collection, statistical concepts and
techniques and the reporting of research. In short, this paper is aimed at providing the
students detail knowledge of social research.
Paper IV
Consists of elective courses. The department offers three options on this paper as
electives.
Sociology of Education :
This paper covers definition of education, field and nature of education and education and
social mobility. It covers emergence and growth of formal education in India, education as
a social system and student movement in India.
Sociology of Population :
This paper discusses population dynamics of Indian society. It covers structural elements
of population, population policy of India and discusses specific studies of family
planning in India.
Women and Society :
The objectives of the course are two-fold. academic and social. This paper aim at building
up a new perspective in the field. It seeks to assess the changing position at women in
different historical and contemporary contexts.
M.A. Final
Paper V (Contemporary Sociological Theory)
The objective of this paper is to discuss sociological theories and to enable student
to analyse social facts in the context of theoretical understanding.
Paper VI (Personality and Social System)
This paper discusses the significance of personality dimension in sociological
analytic. It discusses individual in social context, inter group relations and reference
group.
Paper VII (Social change in India)
This paper discusses the concept and theories of social change. This paper consists of
two sections. Section I includes, Modernization of Indian tradition and section II consist
of social change among scheduled caste and scheduled Tribes in India.

Industrial Sociology
This paper is aimed at discussing the importance of Industrial sociology, emergence of
industries, formal and non-formal organizations in modern industrial sector. It covers
industrial relations and problems of industries.
Sociology of Health and Medicine
This is a new Field of Sociology. This paper gives indepth understanding of health and
medicine. It includes basic concepts, medical care systems, health institutions. Health
status and health policy of India.
