This is a department, which has had the enviable fortune of being nurtured by late Shri Bhaikaka, the founder of the University Township of Vallabh Vidyanagar as well as the first Vice Chancellor of the University, and late Shri H.M. Patel, a doyen of the Indian Civil services and former Union Finance Minister. 

Thus, in spite of being a small department with regard to size, number of faculty and students, this department has made it big in the fields of publications, disciplinary specialization, curriculum enrichment and up-gradation, research and related academic distinctions.  A brief introductory profile of the department, presented in these pages highlights the distinguished features and achievements of the department and its members.

The department has envisaged the introduction of a few novel courses of short duration, which would attempt to address the growing demand and dearth of trained human resources in the concerned fields.  The coming years would, hopefully, also see substantial revelations of the facets of the great Sardar Vallahbhai Patel’s personality and contribution in the hitherto unexplored fields, as a result of the efforts being made by the Sardar Patel Chair funded by the Government of Gujarat and the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Centre, funded by the UGC, both of which are instituted in the department since 2002.
