Research & Development
Research Activities
The main research area in the Department of Materials Science are :
Ø Ceramic-Matrix Composites including Carbon/Carbon composites Processing through chemical & CVR route. Ø Carbon technology including porous & industrial Carbon, Activated Carbon fiber/fabric and carbon metal complexes. Ø Sol-Gel Technology, nanoceramics and nanostructures. Ø Carbon Nanomaterials and Nanocomposites Ø Conducting polymers like polyaniline polypyrole and flame retardant polymers Ø Thin films Ø Utilisation of waste materials, Bio mass and fly ash.
Carbon and Graphite
Carbon precursors, modification of pitches, Industrial carbons, Carbon refractories, active Carbon fibers, metal-carbon complexes.
Composite Materials
Carbon/Carbon Composites: Development of carbon/carbon composites with different types of reinforcements ranging from oxidized PAN fibers to high modulus PAN and pitch based carbon fibers; studies on development of matrix microstruture as influenced by fiber type, matrix precursor and heat treatment temperature;fiber/matrix interface; mechanical and thermal properties of composites; oxidation behavior ;development of oxidation resistant carbon/carbon composites by in-situ matrix modification as well as through coatings.
Ceramic matrix composites : Sol-gel processing of carbon fiber reinforced silicon oxycarbide matrix composites, silica/silica composites; interphase analysis, matrix microstructure, mechanical properties, fracture behavior; development of carbon/ceramic particulate composites with and without fibers through self sinterable cokes; thermal properties of composites.
Sol-Gel Science : Development of black glasses constituting ternary, C, Si and O Elements; oxynitrides; zircon and tantalum based solid and coating materials; freeze gellation and electrophoretic techniques.
Activated Carbon/Metal Impregnated Carbon: Activated carbon from waste biomass, metal impregnated carbon and fiber reinforced composites for water purification, Antibacterial activity. Nanomaterials: Nanotubes and Products Development of novel technique for Synthesis of Carbon nanomaterials (nanofibers, Nanotubes, nanocomposites etc.) with a view to enhance thermal and mechanical properties of the end products.
R & D of Clay based nanocomposites.
Thin Films : Binary and Ternary semiconducting thin films deposition, characterization and electrical properties studies.
Flame Retardant Polymers (Synthetic Resins)
Different synthetic resins like vinyl ester resins, colored epoxy resins have been synthesized and characterized for the preparation of films.

· Prof. L. M. Manocha had been appointed as Visiting Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology during January-98 to December-98.
· Prof. L. M. Manocha has been nominated to be member of the Editorial Advisory, Board of the journal CARBON published by Elsevier Co.
· Prof. L. M. Manocha has been nominated to be Co-Editor in chief of the Journal ‘CARBON SCIENCE’ published by Korean Carbon Society, South Korea.
· Prof. L. M. Manocha was honoured with “Bengur Award” by Indian Carbon Society for his research works in the area of carbon.
· Prof. L. M. Manocha has been nominated as Assessor on NAAC by the NAAC,Bangalore.
· Prof. L. M. Manocha has been nominated expert member for UGC IXth and Xth Plan Committees.
· Prof. L.M. Manocha has been nominated as expert on the Advisory Board of Carbon Fibre lant at NAL by ADA, Bangalore.
· Prof. L. M. Manocha chaired session and delivered invited lecture at National Seminar on ol-Gel, Science, CGCRI, Calcutta.
· Prof. L. M. Manocha chaired the session at EURO 2000. International Carbon, Conference at Berlin , Germany and attended the conference from June 24-27, 2000.
· Prof. L. M. Manocha visited Chungnam National University, S. Korea as Foreign, Expert for Evaluation and advice on Carbon Research Work.
· Prof. L. M. Manocha chaired the session in International Conference on Advanced Ceramic in Cocoa Beach, Florida, USA.
· Prof. L. M.Manocha has been nominated to be member of the steering committee meetings of RSICs New Delhi.
· Prof.(Mrs.) S. Manocha visited as Invited Researcher to Tokyo Institute of Technology,1998.
· Prof.(Mrs.) S. Manocha presented an invited talk on Porous Carbon in Korea.
· Prof. (Mrs) S. Manocha chaired the session on Porous carbon in International Conference on Carbon in Beijing, CHINA.
· Dr. N. M. Batra received Hari Om Ashram Prerit Shri Bhaikaka Inter University Smarak Trust Best Paper Award in Materials Science for the year 1999-2000.
· Dr. N. M. Batra received Hari Om Ashram Prerit Shri Bhaikaka Inter University Smarak Trust Best Paper Award in Electronics for the year 2000-2001.
· Prof.(Mrs.) S. Manocha, Dr. Jignesh H. Bhagat and Prof. L. M. Manocha received Hari Om Ashram Prerit Shri Bhaikaka Inter University Smarak Trust Best Paper Award in Materials Science for the year 2000-2001.
· Prof.(Mrs.)S. Manocha and her team got Best Poster Award at Xith AGM of MRSI, Baroda on February, 2000.
· Dr. Vanraj Chauhan got the award for Best Oral Presentation during 2nd GSRSM.
