Research & Development
RESEARCH CONSULTANCY & EXTENSION:-
Several multifarious aspects of the department assist in the progress of research, consultancy and extension, the foremost of these being the research aptitude and motivation of the teaching faculty.
The research areas may be broadly divided into five namely Foods and Nutrition, Food Biotechnology, Family Resource Management, Human Development and Textiles & Clothing.
Foods and Nutrition:
- Screening of plant based foods or agro-processing waste for antioxidants, anti-microbial agents, Compounds having anti-amylase activity followed by characterization of unknown compounds.
- Evaluation of antioxidant potential of selected plant based foods using animal and human models.
- Evaluation of antioxidant potential of natural food products to prevent oxidation in fats and oils during frying.
- Probiotic & synbiotic food product development
- Adolescent Obesity, Nutraceuticals, Organic foods
Food Biotechnology:
• Tempeh: traditionally soya-based, to be prepared from other low-cost cereals, pulses, millets and their combination
• Bioprocessing (Germination and Fermentation) of various agricultural produce to enhance their functional and nutraceutical properties.
• Production of Lactic acid using agricultural wastes
• Detection of food borne pathogens from different food samples by DNA based molecular methods
• Molecular analysis of probiotic strains
Family Resource Management:
- Work simplification in household chores
- Ergonomics in house & furniture designing
- Consumer awareness and education
- Management practices in NGOs
Human Development:
- Role of media and it’s effect on family dynamics
- Situation of aging women & intervention programmes on institutionalised elderly
- Adolescent knowledge regarding sexuality and human reproduction
- Assessment of personality traits in adolescents
Textiles and Clothing:
- Natural dyes and their application on fabric
- Detergency and natural detergents
- Garment designing & construction for special needs
- Traditional textile craft
- Ready made garment industry
