Message from the Head

Welcome to the Department of English!

We are a Department of a University specifically created to fulfil the needs of the rural population. Visionaries like the Iron Man of India and the first Deputy Prime Minister of Independent India late Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, our founder Vice-Chancellor the late Shri Bhailalbhai Dyabhai Patel (Bhaikaka), late Shri Bhikhabhai Kuberbhai Patel, late Dr H M Patel among many others gave this University a sense of purpose and direction. So did the successive Vice-Chancellors we have had including the present one, Dr Pravin J Patel, who has brought a new vibrancy to the University.

The visionaries envisaged for the educational township of Vallabh Vidyanagar and its crowning glory, Sardar Patel University, an authentic combination of the best of the traditions of learning in ancient India and the modern world in the form of Nalanda and Takshashila on the one hand and Oxford and Cambridge on the other. This Department has remained steadfast in its commitment to the fulfilment of this glorious vision. We have been able to host the XXXII All India Teachers’ Conference, three Advanced Level Summer Institutes in English, several State and National-Level Seminars, several workshops on materials preparation, numerous UGC-sponsored Refresher Courses in English, etc in these 45 years of our existence.

It is not for us to judge what we have been able to achieve ever since our establishment. However, the Department takes legitimate pleasure in the belief that we have been trying our very best to constantly set and achieve newer goals, and invite you to join us in working towards a better future.

To impart education and training of national standards and keep striving towards excellence to reach our ultimate goal of meeting international standards in English Studies.

Mission

The Department seeks to work towards

·          Catering to the region for which this rural University, of which we are a part, was established

·          Bringing about changes in our curricula, teaching and learning processes, materials, modes of evaluation from time to time in reaching national and international standards

·          Adding newer areas of knowledge in the English Studies both the current and the upcoming from time to time in order to strengthen English Studies

·          Establishing linkages with other academic institutions of importance at the national and international levels in order to facilitate a free-flow of knowledge

·          Fostering close association with our alumni and interfacing with the industry for mutual benefit

Our Resolve

The Department has been engaged in making its contribution to the society by designing and implementing short-term, need-based Courses in English for Specific Academic Purposes for all levels. It is committed to translating literatures published in Indian Languages after the 1970s, undertaking research on Women’s Language, and in continuing to assist the University; sister institutions like Indira Gandhi National Open University, H M Patel Institute of English Training and Research, Sardarganj Mercantile Cooperative Bank Ltd (Anand) English Medium College of Commerce and Management, Anand Arts College, Information Technology Centre, Mogri, H M Patel Career Development Centre etc; State and Union Public Service Commissions by providing expertise.
