Course Description


MA (Previous)
: Students enrolled for MA (Previous) are required to offer 3 Core Courses (Papers I to III) and 1 of the four Elective Courses (Paper IVA/B/C/D) available. Core Courses: Paper I: History of English Literature: 1550-1660, Paper II: History of English Literature 1660-1798, and Paper III: History of English Literature 1798-1914. Elective Courses: Paper IVA: Linguistics and Stylistics, or Paper IVB: American Literature, or Paper IVC: Indian Literature in Translation, or Paper IVD: Gender Studies.

 

MA (Final): Students enrolled for MA (Final) are required to offer 3 Core Courses (Papers V to VIII) and 1 of the four Elective Courses (Paper VIIIA/B/C/D) available. Core Courses: Paper V: History of English Literature: 1914 to the Present Day, Paper VI: Critical Theory, and Paper VII: Study of a Genre: Tragedy. Elective Courses: Paper VIIIA: English Language Teaching in Higher Education, or Paper VIIIB: New Literatures, or Paper VIIIC: Translation and Translation Theory, or Paper VIIID: Literature, Psychology and Psychoanalysis.

 

MPhil in English (Full-time)

Students enrolled for MPhil in English are required to offer 2 Core Courses (Papers I and II) and 1 of the six Elective Courses (Paper IIIA/B/C/D) available. Core Courses: Paper I: Research Methodology, and Paper II: Contemporary Literary Criticism and Theories. Elective Courses: Paper IIIA: Poetry; or Paper IIIB: Fiction; or Paper IIIC: Drama; or Paper IIID: Applied Linguistics; or Paper IIIE: Theory of Translation, and or Paper IIIF: Stylistics and Text Linguistics. Owing to shortage of faculty, we have had to restrict these to two. Students concerned have to write a Dissertation of 10,000 words on a subject related to any of the elective areas in consultation with the faculty, depending upon the faculty’s research interests at any given point of time.

 

PhD in English

Students who wish to enrol on our PhD programme are required to submit a Research Proposal. The Departmental Research Committee whets these proposals. Applicants, whose proposals are approved by this Committee, are admitted and allowed to write a Thesis on a subject related to any of the elective area depending upon the research interest of the faculty at any given point of time.
