1.            Profile of the Department, Faculty profile, adequacy and competency of faculty.

The Post Graduate Department of Business Studies (Commerce) was established in 1964. The first Professor & Head was Prof. Manubhai M. Shah, a well-known academician and administrator. During the 43 years of the existence, the Department has grown from strength to strength. There are 13 sanctioned posts of faculty members in the department of which 3 are vacant. Out of which, 4 Professors, 3 Readers and 3 Lecturers are presently working in the department. Out of the ten faculty members working in the department, except one all are males. During the year, the department commenced the M. Phil program in Commerce. It has well-trained faculty who are actively engaged in research work. The faculty also has a vast amount of research publication to their credit. Our faculties are regularly deputed to update the knowledge and skills by participating in State, National and Conferences and Workshops. All faculty members are actively engaged in research and extension along with basic teaching.

 

2.            Recently UGC has supported our Department for Departmental Research Support (DSR) under Special Assistance Program for five year from 1-4-2007 to 31-3-2012. The thrust area for research and teaching is ‘Corporate Disclosure and Investors’ Protection in India in a changing scenario’.

 

3.            Student profile according to programmes of study, gender, region etc.

The department offers 4 subjects compulsory at M.Com (Previous) and a package of 4 optional groups having 4 papers in each group in the thrust areas of Finance & Accounts, Marketing Management, Human Resource Management and Advanced Management at M.Com (Final). M. Phil and Ph. D programmes are also offered in the said areas. There were 143 students registered in 2006, out of these, 66 (46%) girls and 77 (54%) boys’ students at M. Com (Previous) and 153 students are registered at M. Com (Final), of which consisted of 77 (50%) girls and 76 (50%) boys students.  Out of 153, 107 (70%) students opted for Finance & Accounts comprised of 44% girls and 56% boys students. Another optional group i.e. Marketing Management which comprised of 28 students which consisted of 64% girls and 36% boys students. And, the next group viz., HRM, consists 18 students which comprised of 67% girls and 33% boys’ students. In the M. Phil  programmes, there are 8 students registered, of which 3 are girls and 5 are boys, while in Ph. D. programme, 28 students registered which consisted of 8 girls and 20 boys during the year (2006-07) and similar trend was observed at all levels during the last five years.

 

4.            Changes made in the courses or programmes recently.

There are 4 core subjects viz., Advanced Business Management, Entrepreneurship Development and Small Business, Managerial Finance and Business Environment offered at M. Com (Previous) and 4 optional subjects at M. Com (Final) levels were introduced from 1999-2000. In optional group, except Advanced Accounting & Financial Management, the students have to prepare a dissertation for evaluation as part of University                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        


examinations. Besides, the students have to study case studies, field work, industrial units visits, audio-video teaching methods etc. We have been updating our syllabus as per the need of the society.

 

5.            Learning resources of the department like library, computers, laboratories and other such resources.

The department maintains its own gymkhana library and subscribes to a good number of books, journals and magazines as well as Gujarati and English daily newspapers. There is a separate boys and girls common room with necessary facilities along with spacious class rooms for teaching. Besides this separate cabins have been allotted to the faculty members. A small computer laboratory with Internet has been set up. The department is well-equipped with computers, printers, duplicating machine, jumbo zerox machine, T.V. VCR, OHP, etc. Personal Computers are provided to each faculty members and non-teaching staff also avail this facility.

 

6.            Teaching methods in practice other than the lecture method.

The department has a unique programme for the continuous evaluation of students Communication Skill Development Scheme (CSDS). The department regularly updates its courses according to the need of the society. The department also organizes debates, elocution competitions, seminars, guest lectures, factory visits etc.

 

7.            Participation of teachers in academic and personal counselling of students.

The faculty members are continuously engaged in counselling and guiding the students for their M. Com., M. Phil and Ph. D dissertations/thesis as a part of examinations.

 

8.            Details of faculty development programmes attended by the faculties.

Dr. M. K. Patel (1992-93 – one year programme), Dr. P. H. Vyas (2001-02), Prof. P. K. Rathod (2002-03) and Dr. R. M. Joshi (2003-04) had participated in the Faculty Development Programme (FDP) of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India (IIMA). The programme enables the participants to develop competence in management education as well as research and pedagogy.

 

9.            Participation of teachers in academic activities other than teaching and research.

All faculty members of the department actively participate in blood donation camps, cultural activities, University events like convocation, gymkhana activities and other functions organized by the University and other NGOs from time to time. The department has agreed to join with MOU undertaken by the University with Bhativedant College, Budapest, Hungary (Europe).

 

10.        If research is a significant activity, the thrust areas of the department.

The department offers research in the areas of Finance & Accounts, Entrepreneurship Development and Small Business, Marketing Management, Co-operation, Banking, Human Resource Management and General Management.

 

11.        Details of the ongoing projects and projects completed.

At present five major research projects and ten minor research projects are completed while one minor research project is in progress.

 

 

 

12.        Publications of the faculty.

All faculty members are actively engaged in publication of their articles/research papers. They have published 210 articles and 15 books.

 

13.        Method of continuous student development and assessment.

The faculties of the department participate in the University Sponsored Programmes like athletic meets, convocation, lecture series of various experts, etc. As a part of internal and external examinations, the department arranges two internal tests, CSDS, seminars, case studies, audio-video shows in certain areas, continuous industrial interaction and visits etc.

 

14.        Placement record of the past students and the contribution of the department to the student placements.

The department provides placement facilities to the business enterprises such as ICICI Prudential, IDMC, Elecon, Sharekhan.com, HDFC Bank, surrounding business units, etc. Besides, the department helps local colleges/institutions for their requirements of faculty in their institutions every year.

 

15.        Significant achievements of the department or faculty or students.

Dr. M. K. Patel, Professor & Head visited Hungary from 25th May to 25th June 2005 under the Indo-Hungarian Cultural Exchange Programme and has completed a project on Education Policies & Practices in European Countries and India. Dr. Patel has written three books on HRD and he did FDPM from IIM, Ahmedabad with full fellowship.

Dr. S. G. Deobhankar, Professor, was nominated by the Government of Gujarat as syndicate member for three consecutive terms in Sardar Patel University. Dr. P. H. Vyas, selected as Professor in the M. S. University of Baroda. Dr. P. K. Rathod, Professor has been nominated as a member of IQAC – NAAC and a member of High Power Finance Committee of Sardar Patel University by the syndicate.

 

16.        Plan of action of the department for the next five years.

The department has solid foundation of teaching, research and extension activities which would be enhanced according to the need of the society. So as to enable the department to emerge as a centre of excellence in Management/Commerce education not only in Gujarat but at the national level. The department intends to start P. G. Degree/Diploma courses in Finance, Taxation, e-Accounting and HRD etc. The University has introduced M. Com external under the Department of Business Studies and the department will shoulder the responsibility of the same. We have plan to send remaining faculty members at IIMA for Teachers Management Training Programme (FDPM).

 

17.        Any other highlights.

Since its inception, ours is the only department in Gujarat which is consistently engaged in teaching, research, extension, co-curricular and extra co-curricular activities which is reflected in terms of the highest number of M.Com (regular), M. Phil and Ph.D.  Students produced. Thus, the department has become a source of resources for many organizations. The faculty members are invited by the National level organizations like NDDB, UGC, UPSC as experts for their diverse purposes. The senior faculty members are associated with the Universities of Gujarat and outside the State.
