Report of Workshop on Electron Microscopy- 2009

BR Doshi School of Biosciences and Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre for Advanced Research and Testing (SICART) jointly conducted a National level workshop on Electron Microscopy from 19 to 24^th January, 2009. The inauguration session started with a welcome address to the dignitaries, guests and participants by Dr. L. M. Manocha, Head, Department of material sciences and course coordinator of the workshop, then Dr. K. S. Rao, course director introduced the theme of the workshop. Dr. V. S. Patel, Director, SICART and course director of the organizing committee has delivered the welcome speech to participants. The programme was then inaugurated by Dr. T. K. Das, Associate professor, AIIMS, New Delhi. The session continued with presidential address by the Vice Chancellor, Sardar Patel University, Dr. B. G. Patel. Following the vote of thanks by Dr. J. S. S. Mohan, organizing secretory of the workshop, Dr. T. K. Das delivered the key note lecture on ‘Recent advances in electron microscopy’. 23 delegates from different parts of the country were participated in the workshop. All the delegates were actively participated in hand on training on sample processing for Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) studies guided by Dr. K. S. Rao Dr. J. S. S. Mohan and Dr. Haresh Keharia which was carried out at B R Doshi School of Biosciences and electron microscopic observation was carried out at SICART. There were 14 lectures on various aspects of electron microscopy with special reference to its wide applications in various research areas were delivered by specialists from different fields during the workshop. The main attraction of the workshop was it became beneficial to researchers from various branches of biological and non biological research areas like Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Material sciences, Physical sciences etc. The workshop was concluded with valedictory function which was held at SICART on 24^th January, 2009. The session started with a welcome address by Dr. L. M. Manocha followed by presidential speech by Dr. C. L. Patel, Chairman, Charutar Vidya Mandal. The session continued with presentation of certificates to participants by Dr. Pushpa Viswanathan, Professor, Cancer Institute, Chennai. The ceremony concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. K. S. Rao, Head of the department, BR Doshi school of Biosciences and course director of the organizing committee.

Report of IV GSA-VVN CSC Annual Science Meet- 2009

BR Doshi school of Biosciences and C. C. Patel Community Science Centre, Sardar Patel University jointly organized the IV Gujarat Science Academy (GSA) –Vallabh Vidyanagar local chapter annual science meet ‘Sci-Meet: 2009’ on 1, February, 2009. 104 delegates from different areas of research were participated in the Science meet. The inauguration session started with welcome address by Prof. K. S. Rao, Convener of the science meet and Head, BR Doshi School of Biosciences followed by a brief speech about GSA activities in the local chapter by Prof. A. R. Jani, Chairman, GSA Vallabh Vidyanagar. Then the inaugural address was delivered by Dr. H. C. Trivedi, Vice chancellor, Bhavnagar University. The session continued with the plenary lecture on ‘Prevention and early detection of cancer’ by Dr. G. M. Mannari, Consultant Surgeon and Endoscopist, Parimal nursing home, Anand. Following the lecture the presidential speech was delivered by Dr. B. G. Patel, Vice Chancellor, Sardar Patel University. The inaugural ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. K. N. Joshipura, Director, CSC and Co-convener of the science meet. Following inaugural session, the plenary session started in which three lectures were delivered on Nobile prize, 2008 in three research areas ie., Physics, Chemistry and Physiology and medicine by Dr. P. C. Vinodkumar, Dr. Ujjval. B. Trivedi and Dr. Haresh Keharia respectively. Following the lunch break the parallel sessions started in which delegates from research areas Physical, Chemical, Biological and Mathematical sciences presented their research findings. Prof. L. M. Manocha, Head, Department of material sciences chaired concluding session. Prof. K. N. Joshipura, Dr. Vasavada, Dr. Upadhyay , Prof. K. C. Patel and Dr. R. B. Subramanian presented their reports and remarks about the presentations of parallel sessions followed by reports from GSA fellows. The session concluded with Chairman’s remarks by Prof. L. M. Manocha who announced the ‘science meet:2009’ as success and the venue of the next science meet will be organized by Department of Material Sciences, Sardar Patel University.
