From the Desk of the Head

I welcome you the Department of Statistics Sardar Patel University. The department was established in the year 1961 with a single staff member Prof.S.R.Patel. Slowly and steadily the department grew in terms faculty members, supportive staff and infrastructure. In the year 2005 department moved to second floor of mathematics building for its separate identity and better infrastructure. In the year 2005 we received grant Rs.32.5 lac for running a new Innovative PG programme Master in Quality and Productivity Management (MQPM) which now renamed as Master of Science in Quality and Productivity Management(M.Sc(QPM)). Department also received grant of Rs.27.5 lac from Department of Science Technology under DST-FIST[2005]. We have completed first phase UGC-SAP-DRS(I) with grant of Rs.31.5 lac. Presently we recognized as UGC-SAP-DRS(II) department with sanctioned grant Rs.82 lac for the period of five years.
We  have developed well equipped computer laboratories with more than hundred computers with good number of statistical and other software like SPSS, MINITAB, MATLAB, Mathematica, Systat, Oragle 11G, etc.

We also conduct placement activities in the department by bring out placement brochures and approaching the recruiters for placement activities. We have developed a strong Alumni link for the placement of fresh graduates. Most of Our M.Sc(Statistics) and M.Sc(QPM) students are placed in Service Industries, Manufacturing Industries, Govern Sectors and Educational Institutes.

M.Sc. Programme of the department is very popular in the western region with two specialization- Biostatistics and Financial Statistics. While studying for M.Sc. student can attend certificates courses- SPSS, Biostatistics and Financial Statistics as add on courses. Our practical using computers, based on  R and MATLAB, provide good exposure to advanced computing skill. We also conduct manual practical for better conceptual understanding. In the forth semester we have made one project compulsory for M.Sc(Statistics) students. Thus by providing globally required statistical and computational skill we make our students edge over to others in the Job market

M.Sc.(QPM) programme of the department is unique of its kind in the country. It is designed in such way that anyone with a little knowledge of statistics can be offered the course. The course is well fabricated by suitably choosing course from management science, statistics and computer science. We have targeted placement both in corporate sector and manufacturing sectors. Many of our M.Sc.(QPM) graduates have become Quality and Market Research Consultants. About 250 students, who have obtained M.Sc(QPM), have been placed well in many national and multinational organizations. In fact these Alumni have created linkage for project and job placements.

Together with about 160 post-graduate students and Six Ph.D students and dedicated staff we are striving to achieve following goal and mission set by the department.

Our vision is to establish an internationally accredited and globally respected centre for statistical science that contributes to the societal enrichment by developing ethical, dependable and socially sensitive Statistician committed to excellence.

In order to make our vision a reality, we have set our mission as (i) attain academic excellence by updating and expanding horizon knowledge through teaching, research and extension activities, (ii) bring theory into practice through corporate linkage for consultancy and (ii) provide value augmented quality education through innovations.
