The Story of the birth of Sardar Patel University in a wasteland, a robber's paradise, sounds apocryphal. In the late 40s when the country was struggling to scramble out the dark night of the centuries of the foreign rule, a band of selfless persons were busy building up here in the heart of rural Gujarat, a nucleus of higher education, which soon flowered into a University. The University was founded on 31 st October 1955, the Sardar Patel Jayanti Day and a new star named after, "The Iron Man of India", was born on the academic horizon ofthe country.

Today, Vallabh Vidyanagar (with a population of around 2,00,000) is a unique educational township. The University campus is located on a 110 acres and its development and construction have taken place in accordance with a well integrated master plan. It houses 91 Colleges catering to various disciplines including 26 Postgraduate Departments in Science, Social Science, Humanities and Business Administration. In addition, there are separate hostels for male and female students, a Health Centre, Central Library (named after the University's first Vice-Chancellor, late Shri Bhaikaka), a University Guest House, a University Press, Staff Quarters, a Botanical Garden and Playgrounds. The Sardar Patel University was among the first in Gujarat to volunteer for re-assessment and re-accreditation by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council), Bengaluru.

The "Bhaikaka Library" has rich collection of more than 2 lakh books encompassing all areas of Science, Social Science, Humanities, Education, Commerce and Management. Being one of the first in Gujarat to undergo the process of computerization, the library also subscribes to more than 250 periodicals and journals catering to various contemporary areas of study and specialization. The University also has well equipped Computer Centre, which imparts training in computer science and application.

The educational township of Vallabh Vidyanagar was established with the principle objective of accelerating the process of regeneration of villages by application of modern art, science and technology to rural requirements. Vallabh Vidyanagar today hums with activities. Scores of industrial, commercial, trading, banking and agro-based organizations belonging to public, private and cooperative sectors have blossomed in nearby and adjourning areas.

An entire industrial estate "Vitthal Udyognagar" has been established by Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation adjacent to Vallabh Vidyanagar for housing small enterprises. The vicinity of Anand boasts of large organizations such as National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), GCMMF Ltd., Elecon Engineering Company Ltd., Gujarat Machinery Manufacturing Ltd. (PfaudlerGMM) etc.
