About New Course

Centre for Training and Research in Language and Communication

Humanities and Social Sciences Building, Sardar Patel University

Vallabh Vidyanagar – 388 120 Gujarat (India)

With the ushering in of liberalization and globalisation, rapid changes are taking place all over the world. The world is gradually transforming itself into ‘a global village’. Moreover, with English being given increasing importance as a global language, the need for adequate training in language and communication has increased manifold and that provides the context in which the Centre has been established.

The Centre

The Centre has been established with effect from 21 June 2004. To begin with, it will be under the Department of English, Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar, but the University intends to develop it gradually into an autonomous centre.

Aim

The Centre seeks to serve a two-fold aim: (1) to provide training in language and communication to various sections of the society such as students from academic institutions, personnel drawn from corporate organisations and industries etc so as to help them develop fluency and accuracy in language use and to overcome the problems faced in communication, and (2) to engage in further research in language and communication on the basis of the feedback it gets on the effectiveness of its programmes through its faculty and trainees on the one hand and client organisations on the other.

Venue

The Centre will presently be accommodated in the building housing the Departments under the Humanities and Social Sciences. There are adequate classes available here for the conduct of classes in the evening.

Courses Available

Advanced Certificate Courses

1.      Communication Skills in English

2.      Communication Skills in Hindi

3.      Communication Skills in Gujarati

Course Details

There will be three components on each of these certificate courses: two Courses and a Project Work of 100 marks each. Details can be had by writing/sending an e-mail to the Honorary Director, Centre for Training and Research in Language and Communication, Humanities and Social Sciences Building, Sardar Patel University, Vallabh Vidyanagar – 388 120, Gujarat (India). E-mail: ctrlc@rediffmail.com.

Utility of the Courses

These courses are not available in the formal system of education but have become a necessity in view of the fact that people are found lacking in the ability to communicate in the language in which they might choose to interact with others. One of the complaints against the formal education system, therefore, is that it churns out graduates who are employed, maybe, even unemployable. These are complementary vocational courses that students in this University can do alongside their BA/BSc/BCom etc. These skills cannot be taught as a part of the demanding syllabi in specialisations available in the formal system of education but have become a necessity.

Duration and Timings

5 days a Week (Monday to Friday) for the duration of 13 Weeks in all. The timing will be from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm. Even so, the programmes will need a fair degree of flexibility in timings and this will be left for the faculty and trainees concerned to decide mutually between themselves with due intimation to the Centre.

Intake

Each of the courses run by the Centre will have a maximum intake of 20 trainees per programme so as to ensure maximum trainer-trainee interaction. The intake shall not be increased at any point of time in future because such an increase is bound to put strain on the faculty and affect the quality of instruction and training on the programmes offered. There will be two batches per year, ie one batch per term.

Eligibility Requirements

A student who has successfully completed +2 under any stream and is enrolled for an undergraduate course/graduate from any faculty discipline from any statutorily established university/institute in the Union of India will be eligible to seek admission to all the Advanced Certificate Courses.

However, in case of a group from any organisation/institution approaching the Centre with a request to arrange for the training of its personnel, the University may, on the recommendations of the Advisory Committee of the Centre, allow relaxation in the eligibility requirements.

Procedure for Admission

Applicants will have to take a test meant to ascertain their level of proficiency at the point of entry and face an interview conducted by the faculty at the Centre. The Advisory Committee of the Centre will lay down the norms from time to time.

However, this will not apply in case of personnel from institutions/organisations/industries. As an alternative, such a category of prospective trainees will have to take a diagnostic test to ascertain their levels of proficiency before being admitted to the programme that their employers might have sent them to do at the Centre.

Fees 06

The fees in the academic year 2006-07 will be Rs.3000/- for the each of the advanced certificate courses for Indian Students and $100 for Foreign Students. Fee at market rates in case of academic institutions/business organisations/industries approaching the Centre with a request to instruct and train their personnel. The Advisory Committee of the Centre will have the final say in deciding the quantum of fee to be charged per person.
